Biography
Matthieu Bourgeois, one of the two leaders of the firm’s “Intellectual Property and Digital Law” team, has a unique, innovative and multidisciplinary expertise (data protection, open data, cybersecurity) in the field of data and digital technologies. This enables him to provide clients with a comprehensive legal and strategic advice on all projects and activities related to these matters.
His clients include organizations operating in various areas, especially health, energy, transport, distribution, entertainment, social networks, gaming and betting. Matthieu not only advises his clients, but also represents their interests in court proceedings (e.g. he represented a leading consumer association in a class action for breach of the GDPR).
Matthieu is the author of the publication “Droit de la donnée: principes théoriques et approches pratiques” (“Data Law: Theoretical Principles and Practical Approaches“), published by LexisNexis in 2017, and of several articles on topics such as cloud, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and biometrics and he speaks at major conferences. He is also co-founder and chairman of Cercle de la Donnée (an independent and multidisciplinary think-tank that brings together data specialists and produces forward-looking works on digital rights and data science) and a member of Agora 41 (a strategic think-tank created by the French National Cybersecurity Agency- ANSSI); in this context, he leads a working group dedicated to digital sovereignty.
Matthieu is ranked in international legal directories, including The Legal 500 and the Leaders League rankings, as a leading lawyer in France in the areas of IP/IT, TMT and data protection. He was named “Best Lawyer” in 2019 and in 2020 for the practice area “Information Technology Law”.
